Drummondville takes game 1 of the Battle of the 55

Drummondville, Que. – It took them 57 minutes to beat Brendan Cregen, but the Drummondville Voltigeurs scored two goals in the span of eight seconds late in the third period to defeat the Sherbrooke Phoenix 3-2 on Friday night.

A combined total of 30 shots were seen in the opening frame, but only one found the back of the net. Edouard St-Laurent capitalized on a rebound given by Edmonton Oilers prospect, Olivier Rodrigue, to open the scoring with 4:17 remaining in the first period. It was St-Laurent’s 9th goal of the season, tying him with Samuel Poulin for the team lead.

Although no goals were scored in the second, there was no shortage of action as two fights broke out about halfway through the period. Alex-Olivier Voyer dropped the gloves with Jarrett Baker, sticking up for his teammate Samuel Poulin. Just seconds later, Yann-Félix Lapointe and Benjamin Corbeil faced off. Lapointe picked up a minor penalty for cross-checking prior to the fight, but the Volts were unable to profit from the man advantage as they went 0 for 6 on the power play on the night.

Brendan Cregen did all he could to keep his team in the game, but the Voltigeurs were finally able to beat him with just over 3 minutes to play. The home team scored twice in eight seconds at 16:50 and 16:58 of the third period, which proved to be the difference.  Gregor MacLeod pounced on a rebound in tight, tying the game at 1-1. On the ensuing faceoff, the Volts gained possession in the Phoenix zone, where Xavier Simoneau found Brandon Skubel in front for the game winner, igniting the Centre Marcel Dionne crowd. Nicolas Guay, brother of Phoenix forward Patrick Guay, added an empty netter. Patrick was not in uniform for Sherbrooke in this one, so the brothers will have to wait a little longer for their first ever match-up. Taro Jentzsch scored for the Phoenix with 2.6 seconds left on the clock, but it was too late as the Voltigeurs went on to win game one of the Battle of the 55, 3-2 at home.
