After a shutout loss to the Remprarts, 4-0, Friday night. Sherbrooke had a stronger start with the Birds down one goal after the first twenty minutes. Andrew Smith scored a late first period goal with seventeen seconds remaining in the first period to give the Tigres a 1-0 lead.
However, that goal set off a massive Tigres swing of offence in the second period, scoring four goals in the middle frame, two of them occurring in the first 95 seconds.
By the time Thomas Grégoire scored unassisted, to make it 4-1, with a top right corner snipe from the slot at 12:52 of the second. The Tigres had already chased the team’s starting goalie Brendan Cregan from the net, saving 11 of 15 shots in 27:33.
Victoriaville scored three more goals to go up 7-1 with goals from Pascal Laberge at 13:09 of the second, Brady Lalonde at 12:18 of the third and Laberge again at 12:37.
It was too little too late when Yaroslav Alexeyev scored to make it 7-2 at 14:14 with a highlight reel goal. Alexeyev split the Victoriaville defence breaking through the slot to go in alone on James Povall and beat him with a quick backhand deke.
The Phoenix failed to score a single power-play goal over their last two games. The QMJHL’s second ranked power play,26.8%, was fully stymied by the Tigres going 0 for 9 Saturday night.
Sherbrooke will have a chance to avenge their road losses very quickly during their upcoming four game home-stand. Sherbrooke hosts the Remparts for a midweek tilt on Wednesday night, February 8th, at 7 pm this week. Then after the Birds host two straight Maritimes opponents, Cape Breton Friday and Moncton Sunday, the Birds will host the Tigres next Wednesday night on February 15th.
