Cataractes Spoil the New Year Celebrations
Coming off of six wins in their last seven games. The final test of 2016 for the Sherbrooke Phoenix were the 2nd place Shawinigan Cataractes. After beating the Gatineua Olympiques 5-1 the previous night Sherbrooke looked to keep the momentum of the year going before the calendar change for the new year.
Shawinigan got an early 2-0 lead with goals 38 seconds apart in the first period. The goal scorers were Louis-Phillip Fortin and Justin Bernier. Later in the period on a power-play Sherbrooke was able cut the deficit to one goal with a score from Hugo Roy, assisted by Luke Green and Carl Neill, at 14:08.
Heading into the third period down two goals, after Jonathan Deschamps added onto the Cataractes lead, Chase Harwell cut the score to a goal when he scored his fifth of the season and second goal in as many games. Unfortunately with their net empty the Phoenix weren’t able to tie the game in front of the 2,101 fans in attendance when Brandon Gignac put the game out of reach with 0:44 seconds remaining
Harwell now has two goals and two assists in his last four games. Nicolas Roy and Neill recorded the assists on the goal versus Shawinigan.
Evan Fitzpatrick faced another heavy workload stopping 35/38 shots on the Phoenix net from Shawinigan shooters. Sherbrooke was 1/4 on the power-play
The Birds will next hit the road for their first game of 2017 against the Rimouski Oceanic Wednesday. The team will be on the road for five of their next six. The next home game will Saturday January 6th at 4 pm against Rimouski.
