Voyer’s hat-trick lifts Phoenix over Islanders
Sherbrooke, Que. – Alex-Olivier Voyer scored his 6, 7, and 8th goals of the season en route to a nail-biting 4-3 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders. The Phoenix blew a 3-0 lead in the third period, but Voyer played the hero, scoring his 3rd goal of the game with 1:51 left, lifting the Phoenix to a 4-3 win over the Islanders.
After a goalless first period, Voyer opened the scoring, deflecting a Benjamin Tardif shot past Islanders goalie, Matthew Welsh. The Phoenix held the slim 1-0 lead going into the third period, where the action started to pick up. Early in the final frame, Voyer was back at it in front of the net, banging home his second power play goal of the afternoon to put the Birds up 2-0. Shortly after, Benjamin Tardif, who registered an assist on each of Voyer’s three goals, scored one of his own. He found himself in all alone on Welsh and made a nice move to his backhand, beating the Islanders goalie up high. Tardif’s goal extended the Phoenix’s impressive streak of shorthanded goals in four straight games.
Charlottetown did not seem phased by the three-goal deficit however, as they scored three of their own in 5:23 to tie the game 3-3. Clavelle, Budgell and Gursoy were the Charlottetown goal scorers. It was the second time in as many games that the Phoenix gave up three consecutive goals in a short time frame. When asked about it, coach Stéphane Julien was not concerned. He believes it is more a question of experience than it is bad performance and admitted that these things can happen when you have twelve 17-year-olds on your team.
Sherbrooke was able to escape with the win however, as Voyer completed the hat-trick in the dying minutes of the game off a great feed from Tardif. It was the Sherbrooke native’s 5th goal of the weekend, as he notched two more prior to this one, on Friday night against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. Thomas Monette got the win for the Phoenix in net, stopping 26 of 29 shots. The Birds now sit in 4th in the Western Conference and 12th overall.
